An Art School Event in London

If you are a contemporary fine artist or hang with the young art scene, the most exciting time to visit London is during the end of April through July each year to catch its Art Degree Shows featuring graduating art students from local Universities and Colleges. The weather is pleasant and the eagerness of summer is in full bloom, the sunshine’s longer and it sets nearer towards 9 pm. The special Private View evenings are an additional must see and experience, they kick off an art venue opened everyday lasting four days to one week. These evenings are for celebrations and socializing. Alcohol is often served and ‘people watching’ involves colorful and creative art fringe individuals who are as interesting as the artworks on display in interesting and unique ways (you will not find one boring exhibition stand here!). One may even get the chance to observe an emerging artist or perhaps the beginning swell of an art movement that reflects our society in a cultural way.

London is renown for its cutting edge contemporary fine arts scene rivaling New York City or any other major city in the world. In the 1990’s it experienced an outcrop of a group coined the Young British Artists, who’s countercultural but glamorous lifestyles were as much publicized as their artwork successes. British art schools also have been known to produce many worldwide successful Pop and Rock musicians, to name a few; David Bowie, Pete Townshend, Brain Eno, Freddie Mercury, John Lennon, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, John Cale, Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton, Joe Strummer, Sade and PJ Harvey.

Here is a list of London Art Degree Shows to watch for: Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Chelsea College of Art, Goldsmiths University of London, London Metropolitan University, Middlesex University, Royal College of Art, Slade School of Fine Art, Wimbledon College of Art.
